When you import shape files into GeoVista, you need to identify the column or columns of information that you want to use to identify each object. This value is what GeoVista displays when it shows you messages about your shape file data. Make sure you choose a field that will help you to identify the object.
If you imported a shape file with Canada's regional data, and you click on the border between BC and Alberta, GeoVista will not know if you wanted to view the information about BC or the information about Alberta. Therefore, you will see a message asking you which object you wanted to see. The choices displayed in this message depend on what you selected as the object identifier. In this example, if you selected Admin_Name as the identifier, then your choices in this message are Alberta or British Columbia. However, if you had selected Fips_Admin as your identifying field, then your choices would be CA01 and CA02. Obviously, the first choice, Admin_Name, is the more appropriate choice because it more clearly identifies the objects.
