How to open the set picking gate dialog box

Select Interpret | Interpret Mode | Set Picking Gate from the Seismic Menu bar (or press <Ctrl> + <g> on your keyboard).

The Picking Gate controls how auto picking, lateral picking, and volume picking pick your data by limiting how far up and down the trace WinPICS will search for the next pick.

The picking gate can be defined by zero-crossings or by the entire gate.

Zero Crossings

Given a picking gate defined by zero-crossings at ± 50 ms, WinPICS will scan the adjacent trace for a peak in a window 50 ms shallower and 50 ms deeper then the seed pick or until it encounters a zero-crossing in each direction. If a peak is not found in this window, lateral picking will stop. The default setting for the picking gate is Zero-Crossings at ± 50 ms.

Additional Gate Constraint

Search limited to local inflection points -  Finds local min / max limited by local inflection points closest to the seed time.

Example: If your search gate is bounded by zero crossings, then limiting the search to local inflection points will not make a pick if the seed time falls on the opposite polarity.

For instance, if the seed time falls on a negative amplitude and WinPICS is looking for a though, then a pick will be made. But, if the seed time falls on a negative amplitude, and WinPICS is looking for a peak, then a pick will not be made.

Search for Max / Min over entire gate - Finds the max / min in the search gate.

Entire Gate

Given a picking gate defined by an entire gate at ± 30 ms with an amplitude threshold of 0.35, lateral picking will search a window 30 ms shallower and 30 ms deeper than the seed pick.

Additional Gate Constraint

Search limited to local inflection points - Finds the local inflection point nearest the seed time. Looks over the entire search gate. The search gate is not bounded by zero crossings. By default, if no max / min with an absolute amplitude of at least 35% of the seed pick’s amplitude is found, no pick will be made. Set amplitude threshold to zero, to pick without an amplitude seed.

Search for Max / Min over entire gate - The max / min with the largest absolute amplitude within the search window is selected for the pick. By default, if no max / min with an absolute amplitude of at least 35% of the seed pick’s amplitude is found, no pick will be made.  Set amplitude threshold to zero, to pick without an amplitude seed.

The method of using both amplitude and time seeds is useful for picking peaks/troughs that develop doublets or for picking in steeply dipping beds.
