Horizon Picking
Volume picking uses horizon
picks from a previous in-line or cross-line as a guide to pick traces
on adjacent lines. WinPICS makes
picks on the adjacent line if there is an event that matches the defined
(peak, trough,
zero-crossing) found within a certain length of the trace (see ). Follow these steps:
- Post your horizon in the Map window.
- Pick your horizon(s) on an in-line or cross-line
using one of the .
Make sure picking is complete across the entire length of the line. Organize
windows so that the whole seismic line is visible in the window.
- Select Toggle
3D Volume Picking from the Horizon
Picking toolbar of the Seismic window (or press the hot-key combination <Alt>
+ <v>). The Enable Volume Picking window will open.
- Double click on the box under the VolPick column for the horizon(s)
you wish to volume pick.
- Check the summary box in
the Enable Volume Picking window to see which horizons are enabled
for volume picking so you do not unintentionally volume pick the wrong
horizon. If that horizon is set to replace, you might accidentally overwrite the horizon file.
- Click <OK>. Once you're in volume picking mode, the changes to , so you can quickly tell you're in volume picking mode.
- On the Seismic window, use the Next
\ Previous buttons
from the Data Navigation toolbar
or <+> and<-> on your keyboard to step through the seismic. WinPICS
will volume pick adjacent in-lines or cross-lines as you step through
the volume. As each line is picked, it becomes the new guide line and
is, in turn, used to determine picks on the next line.
- Increase the step rate by selecting the Change Step button or
by entering a number between 1 and 9. If, for example, you type ‘5’,
every fifth line is displayed as you step through the seismic with the
Next \ Previous buttons
or press the <+> and <-> keys on your keyboard.
- The Map window is dynamically
updated. Observe the volume picking in both the map and seismic windows
to ensure interpretation proceeds correctly.
- As volume picking moves through the data and encounters
lines with existing picks, the existing picks are merged into the picking
guide line or replaced by picks
that provide a better match to the guide line. You control whether existing
picks are merged or replaced by selecting from the
menu bar or by pressing the hotkey
combination <Shift> + <m>.
- In areas of complex geology or bad data, the may have difficulty
finding a peak. Use the or
mode for forced interpretation
through these areas.
- Continue stepping through the area until the horizon
is picked across the entire volume.
- Switch to the cross-line direction from the in-line
direction (or vice versa) at any time during the volume picking by clicking
the Switch X/Iline button or using the <x>
hot-key. Hit the button or <x>
hot-key to return to the original direction.
- You can volume pick more than one horizon in one
pass. Hit the button or select from the Seismic window to open the Enable Volume Picking window. Double-click on the boxes in Vol Pick column to enable volume picking for all the horizons
you wish to volume pick.
