Choose Data Fields

To open the Choose Data Fields dialog box, click <OK> on the Import Shape File Layer dialog box. When you import a shape file , you have the option to decide which information fields you want to import with each object. Later, when you select the object (whether it be a line or an area), you will see a pop-up information box with the object's values for each field.

If you choose not to display any information fields, your layer will become non-selectable in the GeoVista map. This is typically desirable when you import layers like a Canada map shape file, which does not have any data you want to select. Read more.

To select a field, use the arrow buttons to move the field from the Available Fields window to the Display Fields window. When you click <OK>, only those fields in the Display Fields window will import with the shape file. As well, GeoVista automatically opens the <Layer Name> Properties dialog box, where you can set how the layer will appear in the map. If you do not want to import any fields, click <Cancel>.

If you do not choose any fields, you will not see a pop-up information box when you click on any associated object in the map.
