Preparing
for SEG-Y Import
Follow these steps before you import seismic data in the SEG-Y format:
- Create a WinPICS project directory using Windows
Explorer. This directory will store all your seismic lines, well-spots,
synthetics, horizons, etc.
- Import
your SEG-Y files from another directory (source
directory) or directly from a CD. Keep your source directory separate
from your project directory because WinPICS
outputs the original SEG-Y file as line.yd0 (for 16-bit data) and does
not allow both a line.sgy and a line.yd0 file in the same directory.
- Rename
each source file, if necessary. The filename is used to label the seismic
lines and areas on your map, so line_1 is more meaningful than mig
or 00000001. Use a unique name for each file since duplicate filenames
are not supported, except in importing multiple
versions of the same data. In this case, filenames are the same for
each version, but extensions are different.
- Start WinPICS . When the Browse for Folder dialog box opens, select your project
directory. A blank map will open if you haven't loaded any data into the
project yet.
- From
the Application toolbar select |.
- Find
and select the source SEG-Y file(s) using standard Windows commands in
the Open SEG-Y Files dialog box. You can select multiple 2D lines (see 2D Batch Import Rules for details),
but only one 3D at a time.
- Click <Open>.
- The Import wizard will open to display the ASCII header of the first SEG-Y file.
- WinPICS
uses
filenames and extensions to produce project files and to manage your database.
If you move files in and out of your project, you run the risk of inadvertently
violating one of the file naming rules for the project
database. For more details see Database Filenames.
