About Gridding - Overview

WinPICS provides a robust means of gridding Z values for presentation mapping, time/depth conversion, general mathematical operations, or export to specialized mapping applications. You may grid values stored as geologic well depths and velocities or seismic horizon times/isochrons and attributes such as amplitude, instantaneous amplitude, instantaneous phase, instantaneous frequency, apparent polarity, interval velocity, average velocity, or depth.

Creating Horizon Grids

Create horizon grids by following the instructions in the creating horizon grids overview. Set up your grid definition and click <Execute>. Or, specify custom parameters to better control gridding results.

The grid geometry is easily and precisely defined by setting the gridding area and grid density.
The available gridding algorithms are DGI, inverse distance weighting, kriging/collocation, minimum curvature, and triangulation. Defaults for these algorithms provide good results in most cases, but can be changed to better suit your interpretation needs.
Grid and map trend or residuals separately. Or remove trend, grid residual and restore trend.
Control how WinPICStreats trends in your data by selecting the mathematical model for trend.
Use <More Options> to set specific parameters for gridding algorithms, set variable weighting of data, restrict input data values, and more.
Minimize edge effect by specifying use of data values outside of grid limits.
Manually add or import user-defined control points to bias and influence gridding results.
Use a smart polygon to exclude input points from gridding or to clip existing grids (For example, gridding thrust faults).

Working With Your Horizon Grids

Once you have created horizon grids, you can work with them in the following way:

Post your gridded horizons from the Map Menu bar by selecting Post | Post Gridded Data (or press <Ctrl> + <g> on your keyboard) then select the grid type to post.
Use the Time/Depth Wizard to create depth maps based on either Time and Average Velocity or an Isochron, Interval Velocity, and Depth map.
Click <Gridded Horizon Math> on the Gridded Horizons dialog box to perform mathematical operations on your grids.
Right-click on the Map Color bar and select Set Contour Marking from the popup menu to create quick contours.
Create presentation contours for plotting or to overlay on a color posting of horizons or grids.
Export your horizon grids to a number of mapping applications by selecting | Export Interpretation from the Application toolbar (see Exporting Interpretation).
Plot your gridded maps by selecting Scaled Window Plot or Scaled Template Plot and using the Print to Windows Device dialog box.
