Depth Unit Settings

WinPICS stores all data values in metric. However, when you work in WinPICS you can use metric or imperial for your depth unit settings, and displays.

There are several locations in the interface where you can set input and display values in metric or imperial.

Project preferences

You set the global preferences for a project in the Project Preference dialog box. To open this dialog box, click on the Application toolbar and select Project Preferences. The Maps & Units tab opens by default. View image

Depth Units

Sets the default unit of measurement of all depth data settings and displays in the project.

Seismic Datum

These fields define the seismic datum for your project. Use the Depth Units button to set the unit of measurement for both of these fields.

Use the Project Preferences dialog box to set the default unit settings for your project. However, settings in local data fields can override these settings.

Changing the depth unit in project preferences

When you change the depth unit in the Project Preferences, WinPICS converts the values in the Elevation and Replacement Velocity fields to the new unit. So if you have an elevation of 900.01, and you change the depth unit from meters to feet, the numerical value in the Elevation field changes to 2952.76.

The depth unit and seismic datum you set in the Project Preferences remain the default for all the depth data information in the project, and appear in the main info areas of the Edit Tops and Edit Checkshot dialog boxes regardless of the unit you select in those local data fields.

Edit Tops

Use the Edit Tops dialog box to set the depth unit for your tops, and edit the values in the TVD and depth columns. From the Edit Well Spot dialog box, select a borehole, and then select <Tops> | Edit to open this dialog box. View image

The default depth unit is the same unit selected in the project preferences. Any edits you make to the TVD or depth values will be made using the selected depth unit.

Changing the depth unit when you edit tops

When you change the depth unit in the Edit Tops dialog box, WinPICS converts the depth values in the TVD and depth columns to the new unit. So if you change the depth unit from meters to feet, the numerical value in a depth field changes from 398.700000 to 1308.070866.

However, the unit or the values in the borehole main info area at the top of the dialog box do not change. The depth unit displayed there always matches the selections in the project preferences.

After you close the Edit Tops dialog box, the next time you open it all data will revert to the default unit set in the project preferences.

Edit Boreholes

If you want to edit a borehole, select the borehole in the Edit Well Spot dialog box, and then click <Edit Borehole>. View image

Changing the depth unit when you edit boreholes

The values in this dialog box do not change when you change the unit.

For example, the value in the Kelly Bushing field is 1720 and the unit is set to meter. If you change the unit from meter to feet, WinPICS still displays the Kelly Bushing value as 1720. It does not immediately change the value to 5643 feet. So the Kelly Bushing value for that borehole is now 1720 and the unit is feet.

However, if you close the Edit Borehole dialog box and then re-open it on this well again, the Kelly Bushing field will show 5643 and the unit will be feet.

Edit checkshots

Use the Edit Checkshot dialog box to change the reference elevation or edit depth values for your checkshot. In the Edit Well Spot dialog box, select Checkshot | Edit to open this dialog box. View image

Changing the depth unit when you edit checkshots

When you change the depth unit in this dialog box, WinPICS converts the values in the depth column.

For example, the first number in the depth column is 424.599993 and the unit is set to meter. If you change the unit from meter to feet, WinPICS displays the depth value as 1393.044596.

However, the unit and values in the main info section of the dialog box do not change. The depth unit and seismic datum displayed there always matches the selections in the project preferences.
