Synthetics FAQ
The following are common questions about working with synthetics.
I imported a synthetic and when I open the synthetic none of the well tops display on the synthetic panel. Why?
Only those tops which have been x-referenced with an existing horizon or entered into the horizon database will display on the synthetic.
To display all imported tops, on the menu bar select .
When I modified the depth of a well top, why didn't it move on the synthetic?
Changing the depth of the top alone will not reposition its location on the synthetic. You need to go back into the Well Database and re-compute the well time to update the time value at the new depth.
When I select a well from the database to associate an LAS file, why does the “Associate Selected Wells with LAS Files” window come up blank?
A well spot must have a borehole defined before you can associate an LAS file.
How can I change my default synthetic filter panel?
Follow these steps:
- On the Application toolbar, select to open the Project Preferences dialog box.
- Click the Synthetic tab.
- Change the synthetic filter panel.
When I try to display a synthetic, I get a message “Can't derive time/depth curve. Unknown log mnemonics for missing checkshot? Check mnemonic Lookup Tables." What should I do?
The sonic log in the LAS file is missing, or it is defined using a log mnemonic that is unknown to WinPICS . You need to open the LAS file and add the correct mnemonics.
How do I display a synthetic along with my seismic?
You display synthetics along with seismic data by creating fences.
Why aren't the well tops displaying at the correct time on the synthetic?
You need to delete the checkshot for the well in the Edit Well Spot dialog box, then re-compute well time for the tops.
I created a fence with my synthetic. When I display it, why is there a white space where the synthetic should be?
When the LAS file was associated, no synthetic panel was assigned. Follow these steps to assign one.
- Right-click on the fence where the synthetic should appear and select from the menu to open the Edit Well Spot dialog box.
- Click <Logs> and select from the menu to open the Define Synthetic Panels dialog box.
- Add a filter panel.
- Click <OK>. The synthetic will now display with your fence.
How do I increase the number of traces in the synthetic display?
You can change the number of synthetic traces using the trace replication function.
- Right-click on the synthetic panel, and select to expand the synthetic.
- From the menu bar, select .
- Type a value for the number of traces you want (between 1 and 100).
- Click <OK>.
