Fault Interpolation
Faults defined on an in-line or cross-line can be projected onto adjacent
lines and then edited and interpolated. This makes fault marking on 3D
seismic quick and easy. See 3D
Volume Navigation for tips on how to step through your seismic volume.
Volume Fault Interpolation
Follow these steps to interpolate 3D volume faults on adjacent lines:
- Interpret your fault on an in-line or cross-line.
This line will become the reference line for the 3D interpolation.
- Turn on the fault interpolation function by clicking
Toggle 3D Fault Interpolation from the Horizon
Picking toolbar (or press <Alt>
+ <i> on your keyboard).
This will automatically open the Enable Volume Picking dialog box. Double click on the box under the Volume
Pick/Int column for the fault(s) you wish to interpolate. Click
<OK>.
- While in the Seismic
window, press <+> or <-> on your keyboard to project
the fault(s) from the reference line to an adjacent in-line/cross-line.
- The projected fault is shown by dashed line. Edit the projected fault, if necessary,
until you are happy with its interpretation.
- Interpolate between the first in-line/cross-line
interpretation and the edited projection by selecting Interpret
| Interpolate Faults Now from the bar (or pressing <F5>
on your keyboard). Your edited fault projection will now be used as the
reference line in the next interpolation step.
- Press <+>
or <-> on your keyboard
again and repeat the process described above. You can increase the step
rate by pressing a number between 1
and 9. If for example you enter
5, every fifth line is displayed
as you step through the seismic with the <+>
and <-> keys. When you select
Interpolate Faults Now, all lines
between your reference line and its projection, will be interpolated.
- Branches for each enabled fault are also
interpolated. You cannot interpolate individual branches.
- The
fault guard zone is the number of traces
around the fault that will be cleared of horizon picks as you interpolate
your fault. To set the fault guard zone, select
Interpret | Set Fault Guard Zone from the bar.
